A MODERN WINDSOR STYLE CHAIR FOR THE WATTS GALLERY TEA ROOMS IN GUILDFORD, UK

The modern Windsor design emerged as early as the 16th century in England when wheelwrights started coping out chair spindles in the same way they made wheel spokes. John Green Designs studio was comissioned to envision a modern version of the staple typology for the renowned Watts Gallery in Guildford, UK.

PROCESS

We wanted to combine the essence of the spindle back construction championing traditional techniques like steam-bending with the modern day precision of 5-axis CNC machining. The result, a stripped-back spindleback chair built to withstand the high traffic areas of the gallery. Our studio designed and manufactured a limited batch of these chairs in-house, collaborating with nearby facilities to precisely manufacture the individual components.
